We didn't get to blog on their actual birthday yesterday because we spent the day up in New Jersey, visiting Aunt Joyce and the rest of the family at Joyce's annual Hanukkah party. We all enjoyed catching up with the extended family, eating yummy latkes and watching a very special DVD Aunt Joyce had made from Mommy's grandfather's (Zaide) old 8 mm movies. The movies spanned from 1962 through 1979, featuring some of the exciting travels and adventures of Poppy Jack's family. It was very neat for us to see some early footage of Mommy's grandparents (Bubbe and Zaide), Poppy Jack, his siblings and even Nana, Mommy and Aunt Lori.
Alex, Ari and Kira were spoiled by lots of extra attention and plenty of toys. Everyone was so generous and as a result, Ari and Alex (and eventually Kira) will have PLENTY of activities and toys to keep them busy, as well as cute outfits to keep them stylish. Ari and Alex seem to be getting very good at this opening presents thing...
Mommy didn't get to take too many pictures yesterday but here are a few cute ones:
Cousin Steven's girlfriend Blair reads to Alex (she's a teacher so she was very good at reading stories!)

Alex "looks, but does not touch" at the Christmas tree with all of the pretty ornaments

Aunt Joyce and a fleeing Alex (if we're not quick, we can't catch him in a photo!)

Now back to the 21-month birthday and our big milestone. This morning Ari looked at Mommy, pointed at her diaper, and said "poop." Now she has been doing this lately, but usually after she has done the "deed" and wants a clean diaper. But this morning her diaper was still clean. So Mommy asked her if she wanted to go on the potty, and Ari said yes. Mommy dropped everything to put Ari on the potty (we have a special seat that goes on the big potty) and after several minutes of talking to her Elmo doll, reading a book, and negotiating for some toilet paper, Ari did, in fact, poopy on the potty! She seemed a little shocked and a bit scared, as she declared she was "all done, all done!" and quickly jumped off the toilet, but after the shock wore off she was very proud of herself. Now when we ask her what she did this morning, she proudly says "poop!" We'll see if she does it again, or if her brother follows suit (he was in the bathroom to witness the big accomplishment and the ensuing celebration by Mommy and Daddy).
What else are Ari and Alex up to at 21 months, aside from pooping on the potty? They continue to develop their language and communications skills at lightening speed. It actually feels like we are having a real conversation with little adults much of the time, as they are very good at communicating their needs, wants and what they see around them. Alex will tell you that Mommy's wallet contains "money" and he is going to buy "booty" (Pirate Booty snack, aka baby crack) and "Apple Jacks" or "Lucky Charms" with his money. Ari loves all things Elmo and girly- her purse, jackets, hats...and in the morning when Mommy gets out her clothes for the day, Ari unzips her pajamas and lays down so Mommy can get her dressed. She usually has some say in what she wears for the day and is pretty opinionated when it comes to her style and fashion. As mentioned in previous posts, she also very much enjoys taking off her pants and prancing around the house. Daddy hopes this ends before she becomes a teenager.
If 2007 has brought so many milestones and memorable events, we can't wait to see what 2008 has in store!
