RSV

It turns out we spoke too quickly about Kira testing negative for RSV, the common cold virus that in adults and older children results in just a pesky cough and stuffy nose but can be dangerous for infants. Friday night Kira was coughing especially hard and, as a result, had trouble keeping down any of her feeds. Finally, at 1:30 in the morning after having several dry diapers (signaling potential dehydration), Mommy and Daddy decided to call the pediatrician. Unfortunately for us, and consistent with Murphy's Law, Dr. Miri just happened to be out of the country last week so we couldn't call her to get her advice. A doctor in our own practice advised us to take Kira to the ER, particularly because of her very young age. At the ER in the wee hours of Saturday morning, Kira tested positive for RSV and thus began our four day saga.

So, the past four days have been an emotional and logistical challenge, requiring someone to be in the hospital with Kira at all times and someone to be with Alex and Ari, as well. Nana and Poppy were a HUGE help, spending lots of time with the twins so that Mommy and Daddy could switch off staying with Kira. Nana even went with Daddy, Alex and Ari to a Sesame Street Live show which clearly was the highlight of Alex and Ari's week. Here is a picture of Nana with Alex and Ari before the start of the show; despite the looks on their faces, they LOVED the show and are still talking about it today:
Aunt Lori and Aunt Debbie also came over to play with the kids, who seemed perfectly happy to have extra attention from their aunts and grandparents this week.

We are happy to report that Kira came home from the hospital tonight and is recovering nicely. She clearly felt very refreshed after a nice warm bath in her own house (doesn't she look big?!):
So all is well that ends well, but we're all (especially Mommy) hoping that we never again have to spend time in a hospital with a sick child. We do have to say, though, that a bad situation was made as comfortable as possible by the wonderful nurses we had at the hospital. In a small world coincidence, one of our nurses was another mommy of twins from our local parents of multiples club who also happened to go to the same high school as Mommy. And yesterday we were treated to the pediatric wing holiday party, complete with Santa who stopped by to visit Kira and bring her blessings and a gift (who are we to tell a well-meaning Santa bearing good tidings- and a cool toy- that we're Jewish?!)

I am so glad that Kira is back home and recovering well. I was very worried. I am glad you had a lot of help and that the hospital staff were so nice. The small things make all the difference when you have something like that happening.

Hope the whole Reichmann clan are feeling better and enjoy the weekend.
