Two Weeks

Happy two week birthday to Kira! Today has been a very busy day...

We started out back to (new) "normal" since Daddy had to go into work for a meeting, even though he's officially off until Monday. This gave Mommy a good opportunity, however, to see how life will be without Daddy's extra set of hands. Unfortunately, the weather decided not to cooperate so it was up to Mommy to get all three kids out to Alex and Ari's nursery school in the cold, pouring rain. Luckily, Miri offered to meet her at the nursery school to be available just in case Mommy needed some help. We're happy to report all went very well, though- Mommy arrived earlier than Miri did (accomplishment #1- arriving early!) so she figured she might as well try getting all three kids into the school (in the pouring rain) on her own (accomplishment #2!) With Alex and Ari bundled up in the double stroller and Kira warm and protected in her infant carrier with a Bundle Me cover, Mommy pushed the stroller and carried the infant car seat into the school. Kira slept in her car seat the entire class, leaving Mommy free to participate in the class with the older kids and chat with the other mommies. On the way out it was still pouring, so Miri helped Mommy get all three kids back into the car safe and dry, and we headed home for nap time. Mommy knows it may not go so smoothly every time, but the fact that we managed to survive- intact- our first outing, in terrible weather, is somewhat reassuring.

This afternoon, Miri came over to play with Alex and Ari while Mommy and Daddy took Kira to her two week appointment at the pediatrician's office. After Kira's appointment, Mommy had her own two-week post partum appointment next door at her own doctor's office. Both Mommy and daughter got clean bills of health (post script: unfortunately, this evening Kira started showing signs of her first cold...not unexpected in the winter months with older siblings, we suppose).

The best news of the day was that Kira not only met her original birth weight (the goal for newborns at two weeks) but WELL exceeded it. Recall that at birth, Kira weighed 7 lbs., 12.7 oz. At discharge from the hospital she weighed 7 lbs. 4.5 ounces. At the first doctor's appointment at Day 5 she weighed 7 lbs. 7 ounces. Today she weighed in at...drum roll, please...8 lbs, 9 ounces (65th percentile)!!! And she's gotten taller, too- from 19.5 inches at birth to 21 inches (75th percentile) today. So our little girl is growing quickly, which is very reassuring to Mommy, who's still getting used to the whole concept of nursing. Here are Mommy and daughter at Kira's appointment today:

And here is her "official" two week picture:

Kira is making quite the progress at just two weeks old. Last night she went a record four hours between feedings, giving Mommy a chance to get a little longer stretch of sleep. She's also holding her head up a lot more, taking in her surroundings and sizing up her big sister and brother. As for Alex and Ari, they are starting to take more interest in their baby sister and often insist on rocking her in her swing (sometimes a little too strongly!), helping to burp her, giving her toys and putting on her hat. Alex is especially helpful and likes to get Mommy diapers for the baby and tells Mommy that the baby is hungry when he hears her cry. Interestingly, while Alex will tell us the name of the baby (in Alex-ese, she is "Kika,") Arielle refuses to say her name and will only call her "baby."

Alex and Ari are also entering what we think is the start of the "terrible two's" phase, although it's not too terrible yet. In fact, if it weren't so mischievous, it would actually be funny to watch Alex and Ari jump on the couches, crawl on the tables or attempt to swing from the window blinds, laughing hysterically with each other all the while. They think it's really funny, but Mommy and Daddy know that it's best to nip that behavior in the bud now before it becomes habit. Here is a picture of Ari in one of her more funny (not so mischievous) moments, after she put on a gift for Kira (hat and gloves), and a second picture of her running away from Mommy when she tried to catch Ari to put her pants back on:

So next week it's back to our regularly scheduled program, with Daddy returning to work full time and Mommy navigating the new world of life as a parent of three!

I am so happy to hear that everything is going well with both Mommy and Kira at your 2 week check-ups. It sounds like nursing is a great success since Kira is gaining weight so nicely. How exciting! She is beautiful and will have so much fun with Ari and Alex once she gets a little bigger. If nothing else, it sounds like she will have plenty of entertainment as she watches the twins get into everything. Ha! I love the picture of Ari in the hat and gloves. That will be a perfect picture to show her when she is a teenager!

Take Care! Good luck getting back into your normal routine this week. I know you will be just fine. I told Dan the other day that you are like Super Woman. You never fail to impress me!
